Lesson 70
I taught this lesson to two of my students the other night based off of Paschen’s second lesson. I began each lesson with a warmup with simple attacks from immobility, with an advance, and with a lunge and then moved into the content of the lesson below. I found that the first part of the lesson lended itself well to working on choice actions and working with simple mobility, while the latter actions, which the students were already more familiar with made for a nice cool down.
- Student engages in second, then thrusts in third over the outside arm with a lunge
- Student engages in second, when the instructor frees his blade the student engages in third and glides in third
- As #1, but the student makes the engages with an advance
- As #2, but the student advances with the engagement in second and the engagement in third. The instructor retreats as he frees his blade
- Student engages in second, third, and second with advances and then thrusts in third
- Student engages in second, third, second, and third with advances and then glides in third
- Student continues the pattern of engaging in second and third for as long as the instructor retreats. If the instructor does not retreat, the student finishes the attack
- Student engages in second. Instructor raises his blade (and arm) and the student thrusts in second under the blade
- Choice – after the student’s engagement, the instructor: Does nothing, frees his blade, or raises his arm. The student attacks in third, engages in third and glides, or attacks in second under the blade
- Student engages in second, then glides in second to the low line along the blade
- Same as #9 with the additional choice of the instructor slightly extending the point into the engagement, prompting the glide in second
- From the student’s invitation in third, beat in fourth followed by a straight thrust
- From the student’s invitation in fourth, beat in third followed by a straight thrust
- As the instructor attempts a beat in fourth, the student attacks with a disengagement in time
- As the instructor attempts a beat in third, the student attacks with a disengagement in time
- Student engages in third, begins to extend their arm for a glide in second. Instructor parries in fourth and the student angles around the blade and hits in fourth (does not break blade contact)
- Instructor makes a strong engagement in third, student attacks in fourth by angling around the blade
- Instructor makes a strong engagement in fourth, student attacks in second by angling around the blade
- Student engages in third, as the instructor frees his blade, student attacks with a straight thrust
- Student engages in fourth, as the instructor frees his blade, student attacks with a straight thrust
- Student engages in third, as the instructor frees his blade, student attacks with a counterdisengagement
- Student engages in fourth, as the instructor frees his blade, student attacks with a counterdisengagement
- As #21 with the student recovering forward after each hit and counterdisengaging again
- As #22 with the student recovering forward after each hit and counterdisengaging again
- From the instructor’s invitation in third, three straight thrusts, end of lesson
